Nike’s instantly recognizable Cortez in white, varsity red, and varsity blue needs no introduction—it’s forever linked to the cinematic journey of Forrest Gump. Gifted by his childhood friend Jenny, these sneakers became Forrest’s trusty companions on his epic cross-country run, forever etching the Cortez into pop-culture history.
For sneakerheads, the latest re-release of the “Forrest Gump” Cortez is a cause for celebration. Its return perfectly times two milestones: the 30th anniversary of the beloved film (1994) and the 52nd birthday of the shoe itself (originally released in 1972). Nike previously brought back the silhouette in 2015, along with a faithful re-release in 2016.

The Cortez’s legacy goes beyond Hollywood. Designed in 1968 by Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, it wasn’t just the sneaker giant’s first foray into track shoes—it was the very foundation upon which the brand’s success was built. The Cortez transcended the track, finding a home on the streets of Los Angeles, where its clean lines and affordability made it a fashion staple.

This time around, the sportswear giant has listened to fan feedback and subtly revamped the Cortez for modern wear. The beloved look and feel remain, but the leather upper now features a wider toe box for improved comfort, while sturdier side panels ensure the shoe retains its shape over time. So you can run like Forrest, or simply walk down memory lane, all in day-to-day comfort that stays true to the shoe’s retro appeal.
