As this year’s FUNKSHION event came to an end Saturday night, there was still plenty of action heating up in South Beach as shows from William Rast, Parish, Marceau, D’Amore and more took to the runway - offering a night full of drama, intrigue, sex appeal and high fashion.

Amid a crowded tent buzzing with anticipation, William Rast, the innovative line founded by Justin Timberlake and Trace Ayala, pulsated with the hottest trends in casual chic to the classic groove of the Rolling Stones. One by one, male and female models displayed graphic printed tee’s, tailored jackets and signature denim – an outstanding, cohesive collection with emphasis on simple, clean lines, classic, subtle colors and timeless styles that earned rave reviews from spectators and designers alike.

Parish, an extraordinary array of colorful creations showcasing Rasta pride, featured day-to-day and beach wear for men and women. Whimsical graphics, jeweled t-shirts and iconic wraps in bold colors and a variety of textures highlighted the festive collection, all with an island flavor set to a live reggae band accompaniment of Bob Marley medleys. Undoubtedly, the heartfelt patriotic celebration of country, culture and couture presented by Parish made an impressionable mark on the fashion industry.

During a brief intermission, show-goers gathered throughout the tents (sponsored by Red Bull), both inside and out, discussing high points of the evening thus far and gaining spotlight attention as they posed in front of the official Funkshion backdrops while chatting with media affiliates. Sponsor dance events were displayed on several flat-screen monitors and special Red Bull concoctions were flowing like water.

Following the short break, the winner of this year’s emerging designer was announced by Sugartime Productions; an honor bestowed to Julianna Costa, who received a one-year contract with Sugartime Productions and $5,000 cash for her contributions to this year’s event.

The tent was filled to capacity for the next series of shows. With dramatic electronica resonating, the Marceau presentation featured chiseled shirtless males parading barefoot in the latest designer denim and intimate apparel. Chicly styled females fiercely flaunted day-wear and nightlife party options with asymmetrical designs. Metallics were a primary focus in this collection, from silver denim for men and copper accented denim for women to metallic embellished tee’s for both. In a sea of blinding flashes, all models took the runway once more in a finale noteworthy of a strong compilation of style – the designer made a brief appearance before disappearing again in preparation for the continuation of his line…

Almost immediately after, the tent went dark for a brief moment as faint echoes of Olivia Newton-John’s “Let’s Get Physical” set the scene for the next show – D’Amore by Marceau, a new line of swimwear on a whole new dimension. Classic halter styles reminiscent of retro eras gone by in simple white and dramatic metallics were highlighted, as were fresh designs of clever cut-outs, fun patterns and futuristically detailed bikinis. The designer reemerged for the grand finale, escorted by a model hand-in-hand and was greeted with thunderous applause from the audience for two collections that were very well received.

Overall, it was a night filled with glitz, glamour and gloss – innovative design meets practical application, a fitting description of the FUNKSHION name. Until next year…
