Adam Alaniz has been drawing since his third grade teacher asked the class to draw birthday cards for each other. His drawings are filled with animals, flowers, clouds, and calm colorful rivers. He draws his inspiration from Mythology, Great Lectures Teaching Series, and nature. Adam currently lives in Riverside, California.
After graduating from The Art Center College of Design, he met his fiancee while working part time as a meter reader. Now he is a full time artist and has been chosen for American Illustration 27 for his illustrations for his book Germ Stories. Adam currently spends most of his time painting and drawing, hiking, playing wii, watching nature shows, traveling to gardens, and spending time with his wife and son.
TAXI spoke with Adam to share with us his works and inspirations.
TAXI>>Hi Adam. Your style of illustration reflects a sense of child-like innocence and whimsy, how did you develop your sense illustration style?
Adam>>Hi! For me it is still hard to say I have a style. I think im a mesh of all of my teachers and culture I was raised in. Growing up I was lucky enough for my parents to buy lots of toys (from swap meet and toyrus.) My brother and I would create different stories with about hundred different characters and different scenarios, till we were in Jr. High. I believe that childlike imagination and sensitivity never left me.
TAXI>>Your works also portray greenery in almost all of the pieces, and brings to mind the animated movie "ferngully", would you describe them as having a "go-green" theme movement?
Adam>>Hah! I haven’t seen Ferngully since Elementary school, but I remember wanting to live in the jungle after watching it. I think there is a “go green’ theme as a background theme in my work. Most of my work recently has a central theme of searching and observing, creation and destruction, and pain and beauty.
TAXI>>On a personal level, are you a "go-green" eco-friendly illustrator?
Adam>>I like to think that I am a go –green kind of guy and I try to be as earth friendly as I can.
TAXI>>From what aspects of Greek mythology, art history, medieval literature and science do you attribute your stylized illustration?
Adam>>It depends of the piece but I like to use books about Mythology, fables, history, and nature documentaries as an inspirational starting point for lots of my paintings. I usually develop stories around these points of inspiration and from these stories I usually find a character I find curious and make a painting about the world they live in.
TAXI>>Which is the usual tough stage when it comes to creating your illustrated works? The conceptualization or the production? And, why?
Adam>>I think every part of the process is challenging, that’s why I feel so good to finish and begin pieces. I enjoy the challenge but there is always some stage that is really tough. . Sometimes its so tough that I start a whole painting over again because I really want to enjoy the process of making the art. Unless there is a deadline, then I forced to get inspired quickly.
TAXI>>With your style of illustration works, how would you say they reflect your personal philosophy in life?
Adam>>I believe that we all are going through hard times and we need to have hope that there are brighter days ahead. I think that idea of hope is one of my background themes of the art I create.
TAXI>>Having found your own unique style of illustration, do you foresee yourself experimenting with any other styles? If so, what sort?
Adam>>I think I developed my style over the years. I never tried to develop a style it kind of came out naturally. The process sometimes changes, but overall I think that the piece are just Me mixed in with all of the teachers I have had throughout school. But I do think about doing some of pottery and woodwork.
TAXI>>I'm sure everyone would love to see your current working space. How about showing it to us?
Adam>>We just moved in so please excuse the mess.
TAXI>>Okay, before we end, where would you like a TAXI to take you to now?
Adam>>To dinner! Just kidding, I would like taxi to take me to meet clients, and artist who passionate about creating.
