Luis Torres is the celebrated designer of Mexico City that followed by working as a story board artist to senior art director in several advertising agencies after graduating from his graphic design bachelor degree.

His experience has proved successful and simplistic, and it wasn’t just the direction that has changed to further dig into the creative scene of motion design. His art is determined, along with his explores on a more loud approach. But that doesn’t affect the man or his style in the creative arena. There are certain obstructions while working but the back catalogue remain largely unaffected.

TAXI >>Hi Luis! Tell us about your background, your necessary inspirations and what made you decide the career path you are on today.

Luis Torres>>Well, I live in Mexico, Mexico City to be more specific, but I consider myself a creative gipsy, taking influences wherever I find them, I have a bachelor degree in graphic design and I'm in love with art. I think I decided a career in design mostly 'cause I hate to work and for me art and design are what make me feel good. My inspirations are whatever that breathes, moves or collapses in this world, and most important women, they are my real necessary inspiration!

TAXI >>How will you introduce your art to anybody who’s new to it?

LT>>Well I think I would say my art is against the culture of happiness and a conformist way of living. My art is whatever is in my guts and in my heart

TAXI >>The bulk of your works within your (TAXI) portfolio uses subdued colours, yet the front cover banner screams a loud pink. What controls your mood and style?

LT>>Mostly whatever I feel in the moment, I like to experiment in every venue, I really like Bruce Lee's concept of Jeet Kune Do, "the best style is to have no style". In the specific case of the banner, I'm trying to make more disturbing images with nice pictures.

TAXI >>What are the steps in your creative process?

LT>>Think, sleep, think again, sleep a bit more and then sit on my computer and work, work , work.

TAXI >>Your ‘5kin 01–13’ collection specified that the human body is empty. Please elaborate.

LT>>5kin was a project I did, thinking in how our society is focusing more and more in how things look on the outside, the human body in specific, and rejecting whatever is inside, now is more important to look good on the outside, no matter how the inside is. For me the human body is just an outer shell, whatever we put inside, call it spirit, soul, personality etc, is really what is important.

TAXI >>Somehow, it makes me feel eerie. Do you get a sense of satisfaction doing art that disturbs?

LT>>Life this days is disturbing, yeah I like it.

TAXI >>How do you define Artistry?

LT>>Whatever makes you better than the best you could be

TAXI >>And what would be your most substantial project that has left a meaningful impression? Why is that?

LT>>My most substantial project till' this day, and not the last, has been my short film "Technorganic", I learned a lot about myself working on it, and most of it, the impression and feelings that it projects to the people that see it, I'm glad for the result.

TAXI >>The contrast between the art scene and community in Mexico and other city is certainly stark. Is there a specific distinction about Mexico that you miss, which made you go back last 2004?

LT>>You know, I have to be really honest in this one, I was running away of my own country, because of all the problems and the situation of insecurity that my country is in right now. When I was away, I began missing my friends, my family and my culture, and felt like I was in an auto imposed exile, and realize that right now, there are no boundaries, no frontiers, at the end we all live in the same world, we are all part of the human kind, so I decided to come back to the place I was born to try to make a difference and to find an option to auto imposed exile.

TAXI >>You are primarily in the area of Digital Art. What do Tom Dixon, Zaha Hadid, and Yann Arthus–Bertrand mean to you?

LT>>To be honest, I didn't knew who they were till this interview, I feel ashamed for it, so I looked their names on the internet and read about them, but I can't make any thought about them till I understand their work and learn from it, sorry.

TAXI >>How important is music to you? And what CD that never seems to be found outside your stereo system?

LT>>Music is really, really important to me, I always thought that my life has to have it's own soundtrack!!

No cds just an Ipod.

TAXI >>In one sentence, describe how you look.

LT>>I'm a Hyper- Super- Cool NERD!!

TAXI >>If there would be a taxi to bring you right now, where to?

LT>>Asia and returning through Europe, any one who wants to give me a ride??

Thank you Luis!
