PRESS RELEASE

June 2008

In the coming weeks, the city of Essen will once again become the meeting point for international design: on 23 June 2008, the awards presentation of the red dot award: product design 2008 will attract more than 1,000 international guests from design, business and politics into the Essen opera house, the Aalto Theatre. The traditional highlight of the event will be the official announcement of the “red dot: design team of the year”. The laudatory speech honouring the design team of the year will be given by the Bonn-based author, journalist and radio presenter, Dr. Michael Köhler.

This year, the design quality of 3,203 submitted products from 51 nations had to be assessed. In total, 50 of them received the “red dot: best of the best” for their outstanding design; another 676 received the “red dot” quality seal for high design quality. This year it was particularly challenging for the jury consisting of 24 international experts to select the best products from the high quality entries. “The designers have realised that customers’ demands have increased enormously in recent years,” said Icsid president and jury member Professor Carlos Hinrichsen. “Only absolute premium products can be successful in the market, and identifying them was an interesting challenge for us.”

The event programme will already begin in the afternoon in the red dot design museum with the opening of the two special exhibitions “Design on stage – winners red dot award: product design 2008” and “Bose Design. The Expression of Technology“, before the awards presentation honouring the winners starts at 6:00pm in the Aalto Theatre. The event’s cultural programme will consist of performances by the aalto ballet theatre and the drummer Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic.

Following the awards presentation, the winners and guests of honour are invited to the traditional Winners’ Dinner prepared by star chef Frank Rosin. The Winners’ Party will start in the red dot design museum at 8.30pm; here the winners will be able to celebrate their awards in the impressive industrial ambience of the boiler house while enjoying a red dot cocktail.

The winners’ exhibition in the red dot design museum
From 24 June to 27 July 2008, the red dot design museum will display all award-winning products in the exhibition “Design on stage – winners red dot award: product design 2008” as well as present the exhibition “Bose Design. The Expression of Technology”. Simultaneously, the red dot design museum will exhibit award-winning design concepts in the special exhibition “red dot award: design concept winners’ exhibition” presented by the red dot design museum Singapore. With an exhibition area of more than 4,000 square metres and some 1,500 products, the red dot design museum in the former boiler house of the ‘Zeche Zollverein’ colliery houses the largest permanent exhibition of contemporary design worldwide.

    PRESS RELEASE

    June 2008

A principal goal of AIGA, the professional association for design, is to empower designers to succeed at each stage of their careers. AIGA seeks ways to be a catalyst for personal and professional growth by providing invaluable resources for professional development and inspiring touchstones for creative development. Yet, just as important, is AIGA’s commitment to develop the leadership potential of every member.

Chapter leadership is one step in the process, and the AIGA Leadership Retreat brings chapter leaders together each year to provide them with skills and information needed to succeed in engaging local designers in their own future and the future of the profession.

In May 2008, volunteer board members from 56 AIGA chapters and three AIGA communities converged in Omaha, Nebraska, to share their experiences in producing successful events that other chapters can replicate, to explore programming ideas and to prepare for the new program year that starts each fall. More than half of the nearly 220 attendees were new to their leadership positions and the retreat, giving AIGA the chance to update everyone on collective initiatives as well as share best practices on chapter activities ranging from increasing membership to fundraising. With “Focus” as the theme, many presentations, success stories, exercises and workshops took place to help leaders focus on developing the skills necessary to lead their chapters and reach institution-wide goals.

AIGA Executive Director Richard Grefé delivered the State of the Association address and challenged attendees to work together on issues ranging from diversity to serving members better. AIGA Nebraska’s president, Tanya Patry, and the entire chapter board served as gracious hosts to the attending group. While each year new elements of specific leadership training are offered, this year’s involved techniques to recognize and respond to the challenges of leading a diverse membership and board.

All AIGA members have an opportunity to demonstrate their leadership potential, which can be an important asset in professional success. In addition to chapter opportunities, in July 2008 there will be a call for nominations for positions on the national board. At the same time, AIGA is looking for volunteers to serve on a variety of national task forces aimed at addressing issues facing the profession. Become a leader; get more involved.
