PRESS RELEASE

August 2008

Poggenpohl is expanding. The manufacturer of premium kitchens and several-time red dot winner intends to significantly increase its turnover over the next five years; the aim is an increase to approximately 200 million euros. Up to 60 additional company-owned sales studios are to open worldwide.

The company will set up new studios mainly in the metropolises of Europe and the US. “Poggenpohl is extremely well-equipped for continual growth with its clear concept,” said Elman Duffner, managing director of Poggenpohl.

Parallel to the approximately 420 dealer-operated kitchen studios, of which some 140 are selling the Poggenpohl brand exclusively, the German luxury brand manufacturer already has 31 company-owned sales studios. The most recent studios to open were in Atlanta, Birmingham, Dresden, and Vienna. In Germany, Poggenpohl already operates eight studios, located in Dresden, Hamburg (two), Münster, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, and Stuttgart. “Within four years we have more than doubled the number of our own studios,” explained Elmar Duffner.

The fact that an investment in design has played a significant role for such commercial success is indisputable: Poggenpohl not only stands for the innovative design kitchen “made in Germany” but also for international luxury and represents highest aesthetic and technical quality. For the excellent design of its kitchens Poggenpohl has received several distinctions in the red dot design award. Just this year the kitchen “P’7340”, a luxury kitchen developed by Poggenpohl in co-operation with Porsche Design, received the coveted red dot distinction.

The exclusive Poggenpohl Studios are located in the metropolises of important international markets. Besides the UK and the US, important foreign markets are Russia, China, India, and the United Arab Emirates. Poggenpohl’s export share is currently 75 percent. Premium kitchens by Poggenpohl are delivered to more than 70 countries.

    Presentations

  • Breaking and Entering
    with Lee Brimelow // Adobe
Decompiling Flash content is something that people either love or hate. This session will walkthrough techniques that you can use to break open Flash files for fun and profit. It will also explain how decompiling your own content can be an excellent way to learn how Flash operates behind the scenes.

  • Don't Get Mad, Make a Video!
    with Phillip Kerman // phillipkerman.com
Low budget youtube videos are good for more than just cat lovers and exhibitionists. Once you make a simple video to expose something that frustrates you, you'll find it's a ton of fun and can actually help relieve stress. For me, when a new technology fails to live up to its hyped promise (which is often) I make a critical video using satire to hit hard. In this presentation, you'll get tons of ideas how to make your own videos, some technical and creative techniques, and-if we're lucky-some of my alternate personalities (from the videos) will channel through my body and emerge in person! Creating characters that say things you could never say in real life is a great release.

  • Generative Mobiles & Glass Sculptures
    with Dr. Woohoo // drwoohoo.com
Dr. Woohoo is writing code to generate artwork on a wide variety of media including canvas, a wide variety of art papers, mobiles and glass sculptures. He's hacked into his Epson printer in order to print on a wide variety of media including art-, rice- and Japenese-papers, under- and over-printing and emulsion- and gelatin-transfers. For the mobiles, Woohoo has integrated his creative workflow and custom AIR apps with the laser-cutting and etching service provided by Ponoko.com. For the glass sculptures, Woohoo's software and scripts embrace cnc-milling with the traditional process of glass kiln casting. Woohoo will show you his latest artwork and talk about the processes involved in moving beyond a 2d plane.

  • Why I (Still) Love Flash
    with Grant Skinner // gskinner.com
Grant has been working and playing with Flash for over a decade. Grant is also well known to friends and family as having the attention span of a 5 year old hopped up on a triple shot of RedBull. "Why then," you may ask, "is Grant still working with Flash? Is it for the great stinking gobs of money, the beautiful women, or is it for something less tangible?" This session will seek to answer that very question, illustrated by commercial and experimental projects Grant has worked on recently, or just found especially inspiring.

  • Flash and Music and Beyond
    with Andre Michelle // andre-michelle.com
Welcome a new species: Flashmusicians! I will give a short non-technical introduction of the new sound capabilities in Flash10, showcase the Hobnox AudioTool - an online music application entirely built in Flash. Flash Lite's future in an iPhone Dominated Landscape // Panel Discussion

  • Moderated
    by Tony MacDonell // Teknision
Flash Lite 3 is now starting to appear on devices around the world. It offers extremely enhanced capabilities over it's older versions, and allows designers and developers to build beautiful experiences that you carry in your pocket. While it is time for Flash developers to get excited about these new possibilities, the iPhone's lack of support for the Flash Player looms large as it is quickly becoming the primary device that the public is yearning for.

A panel of experts from the world of Flash Lite development and iPhone development will discuss these issues in detail.

    Tools vs Content
    with Remon Tijssen // Fluid.nl // Adobe
Guided by a couple of Fluid's projects i want to talk and discuss the subject of content creation vs tools. One of those projects is Spectra. A news visualization tool that gives consumers an alternate way to navigate msnbc.com in a three dimensional real-time interactive viewing state. Spectra offers user customization and dynamic browsing. Spectra’s alluring design displays news headlines, fueled by RSS feeds, as colorful, graphic whirlwinds of movement. Spectra is an exciting step for Fluid's ongoing mission to bring functional tools and a dynamic user experience together.

This presentation which intention is to be more of a discussion about the matter brings you the behind the screens of my personal way of working on dynamic media design and how my work has moved more towards tools rather then websites. How sketches, errors, personal-, client- and user needs brought me where i am today.

Encyclopedia of Life - Finding Forests in the Tree
    with Marcos Weskamp // Adobe // marumushi.com
The Encyclopedia of Life project (EOL.org) was created in response to the vision E.O. Wilson presented at TED 2007 of “an electronic page for each species of organism on Earth.” An interactive version of the Tree of Life was needed, and the idea of representing 1.8 million species on the screen at once was very compelling. Marcos Weskamp’s great design and Gever Tulley’s technical ingenuity overcame what many would have considered an insurmountable problem: too much data, and too little screen real estate. A new kind of map was used: it turns the Tree of Life on its head and flattens it. Marcos will describe how he came up with the visualization, how it works and give a sneak peek at the future of exploring biodiversity.

    Thermo: From Concept to Design
    with Ethan Eismann // Adobe // eismann-sf.com
Thermo's XD designers (Ethan, NJ, and Rob) talk about how they created a revolutionary new model for creation of animation and choreography. We'll give the audience a behind-the-scene look into our design process. Afterwards, we'll provide hands-on demos showing how to use Thermo to create fun and beautiful experiences that don't look or feel like your typical RIA.

    Interactive Engagement Layer
    with Jonathan Moore // BLITZ
Adding the top layer of interaction is a powerful tool to engage the user into any creative project. As the interactive industry has evolved and matured we will look at appropriate usage of technology to create a truly unique experience. By deconstructing recent projects and experiments you will learn how to add that effective layer of interaction to your projects.
