Recent alumni of Art Center College Of Design’s Photography and Imaging Department will be exhibiting their work as part of the cross-cultural project, Jeunes Talents (Young Talents), a joint initiative between Maison de la France and French Cultural Services in Los Angeles, Air Tahitiy Nui, Rail Europe and France Los Angeles Exchange (FLAX).
Jenues Talents is a project intended for the capture of the spirit of modern France through the eyes of a new generation of American artists. This exhibit will be shown at the Louis Stern Fine Arts gallery on Melrose Avenue.
For this year's Jeunes Talents, emerging photographers were invited to France and asked to interpret the daily life of select French cities. The resulting work will be exhibited in Los Angeles and featured in a major French tourism advertising campaign created by France's national tourist office, Maison de la France. Images range from surreal to naturalistic in style and focus on various subject matter including architecture, portraiture and landscape--revealing perspectives on contemporary society that could only have been seen with fresh eyes. Overall, the collection will provide summation of the artists' feelings and personal understandings of the regions that they visited.
Emerging photographers were selected from Art Center College of Design, California Institute of the Arts, Otis College of Art and Design and Loyola University in New Orleans. Participating students from Art Center include Spencer Lowell, who was asked to capture images of the central city of Lyon, the country's second largest metropolitan area; and Justine Maccario, who will exhibit images of Montpellier, the capital of Languedoc-Roussillon, which straddles Catalan and French cultures.
"Jeunes Talents is a unique opportunity to open the boundaries of art, creativity and cultural exchange," said Yann Perreau, Deputy Cultural Attache, Los Angeles.
"Take eight talented young American photographers. Put them in an unknown environment, such as a French city with its own traditions and culture. Add key actors in the contemporary photography art scene, such as top art colleges in the U.S., and mix this with a famous gallery known for challenging photography, such as Louis Stern Fine Arts. The result is one of the most exciting, inventive and challenging art concepts to date. Cultural Services of the French Embassy is proud to be part of this project along with its partners."
Speaking about the alumni participation in the event, Dennis Keeley, Chair of Art Center College of Design's Photography and Imaging Department said, "Photography resides in the convergence of technology, culture and commercial practices. This is a perfect opportunity for our graduates to fuse art as part of a larger collaborative venture."
