PRESS RELEASE

June 2009

The most famous burp in design history and top product quality for over 60 years: Tupperware has been awarded the highest honorary distinction in the design world–the red dot: design team of the year 2009.

Tupperware’s design team, led by VP Global Design, Susan Perkins, has consistently created best-in-class, innovative products which are showcased around the world.

With the title red dot: design team of the year, the red dot annually pays tribute to a design team that has distinguished itself through continuously innovative design and has thus set new standards.

Previous winners of this title include teams of Bose, BMW, LG Electronics, adidas, Pininfarina, Nokia, Apple, Siemens and frog design.

The festive awards presentation of the red dot award: product design 2009 including the tribute to the Tupperware design team will happen June 29, in the Essen opera house, the Aalto-Theater.

Tupperware has pursued a unique design philosophy which has been embraced across the globe; its products are universally recognizable, with 90 per cent brand awareness. Simple, colourful products accompanied by the signature seals have become characteristic of Tupperware the brand and follow a similar iconographic style since Earl Silas Tupper, the company founder, created the first designs in the 1950s.

“For decades, undeterred by all the developments in design history, Tupperware has been developing consistently functional products with optimal practical value using simple but nevertheless ingenious, and definitely distinctive design,” says Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator of the red dot design award and senator of the international umbrella organisation of design, Icsid, explaining the selection of the design team of the year.

“With the typical Tupperware design, the company has managed to give ingenious ideas an appropriate form for many years. Tupperware’s success story is an example of continuous innovative potential, which has been shaping our daily lives for generations. For this achievement we are honouring the Tupperware World Wide Design Team with the highest distinction that exists in the design world.”

    PRESS RELEASE

    Deadline: 15 September 2009

Beijing Typography Exhibition 2009 (bt'09), one of the official exhibitions of Icograda World Design Congress 2009 in Beijing, is now seeking design submissions under the theme of ‘Typography, Unity with New Life.’

Chinese characters symbolise both words and images, indicating sound and meaning. In its five thousand-year history as a language system that incorporates pictograms, ideograms and phonograms, the Chinese language has evolved into a highly sophisticated writing culture, illustrated by the creation of the first form of (wood-based) printing.

Furthermore, the idea of calligraphy as a sophisticated art has influenced many countries worldwide. Over the last 30 years, however, a new set of technological difficulties have been faced and overcome, including the migration from traditional writing and mechanical systems into a digitalised one.

To showcase the research and international efforts of the past couple of years, as well as the re-thinking of the complex nature of typographic art, bt'09, an exhibition founded on the theme of ‘Typography, Unity with New Life,’ will take place as part of the Icograda World Design Congress Beijing 2009. This will be one of the most influential and largest graphics exhibitions to take place in China to date.

The deadline for submissions is 15 September 2009.
