Mention a "9 to 5" job to Generation Xers and Millennials in today's workplace, and you might get a blank look in return. They're just as likely to be doing their jobs at coffee houses in the predawn hours, armed with laptops and cappuccinos; or on cell phones in their cars, waiting to pick up some Chinese take-out for dinner.

In a world transformed by high-tech communications, information workers operate in a flexible environment rooted in self-sufficiency, teamwork, and value for a job well done. Office buildings still dominate the skyline, but many future-focused businesses are busily creating virtual offices, where workers in remote locations connect digitally. The new 9 to 5 is characterized by flex hours, job sharing, less hierarchy, and informal surroundings and attire. Job security is achieved by learning new skills and adapting to change.
