Tennis player Maria Sharapova bade adieu to her career, prompting Nike to create a fitting send-off.
The Russian superstar retired with five grand slam titles to her name. Unfortunately, she was banned from the game for two years in 2016 due to claims of drug use.
To honor her tremendous career, Nike released a tweet that showed her portrait with lines plastered atop it. “They wanted you to walk away when you made mistakes. But instead of becoming the player the game wanted? You became the player the game needed,” the text read.
The tweet follows Nike’s heartfelt tribute to Kobe Bryant a few days ago.
Nike had been the sponsor for Sharapova throughout her entire career. A 2006 ad created with Wieden + Kennedy highlighted her “intense competitive appetite” that laid beneath her “beautiful, feminine exterior.” It ran during the 2006 US Open, where she defeated Justine Henin for the Women’s Singles title.
