You can almost hear the voices in this still, and now they’re harping on you to mask up and help stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Looking up to Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s NYPD as inspiration, the Mumbai police have updated the famous scene in season five episode 17 in the form of a meme to send out a crucial reminder about wearing a mask during the pandemic.
In the meme, all but the fifth suspect in a police lineup have masks plastered on their faces. The image is paired with the caption, “It was number five! Number five endangered our lives.”
In the iconic cold open, a witness named Gwen (played by Devin Sidell) tells Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) that she did not see the face of her brother’s killer, but might be able to recognize the culprit’s voice since he was singing the Backstreet Boys’ I Want It That Way around the time of the crime. Jake then orchestrates an impromptu performance from the five confused murder suspects.
“It was number five. Number five killed my brother,” Gwen declares after a captivating singalong. “Oh my God, I forgot about that part!” Jake blurts out.
In response to Jake’s memory lapse, the police department drills into its caption, “You simply cannot forget your mask!… #WeWantItThatWay.”
