The Office had to pay US$60,000 for a silly joke made by Steve Carell’s character, Michael Scott, in the season three holiday episode A Benihana Christmas.
The Office’s producer and writer Jennifer Celotta shared the story behind the expensive joke on the latest episode of Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey’s Office Ladies podcast, revealing that she had Carrell sing the lyrics of Eddie Money’s Two Tickets To Paradise, which eventually cost the show a hefty price.
In the holiday episode, Scott would sing along to the song as he tells the camera that he will surprise his girlfriend, Carol, with tickets to an all-inclusive holiday to Sandals, Jamaica.
“I wrote a joke where [Scott] says, ‘I got two tickets to paradise.’ And he says, ‘Pack your bags we leave the day after tomorrow,’” Celotta noted in the podcast. “At the sound mix, I found out from Kent [Zbornak, The Office producer] that was a US$60,000 joke.”
