Steve Carell is a stressed-out Santa in a holiday ad titled The Greatest Gift for telephone service company Xfinity.
In the clip, Carell—who’s in a red suit getup and white beard—gathers his elf colleagues via video conference to help come up with new gift concepts as he’s “out of ideas” this year.
“Ho ho ho ho! Good morning every—you know what, I can’t even fake it,” Carrell’s Santa Claus says. “Look, after the year we just had, the usual gifts just are not going to cut it. We have to find something else and fast.”
The elves begin to brainstorm new gift ideas that are worthy of ending 2020 on a high note. One elf picks up a copy of a newspaper with the headline, “Santa out of ideas.” When he looks up, a bunch of elven kids are happily engaging in a fun snowball fight. It then hits upon him that the theme of this year’s Christmas should be the gift of “togetherness” for the holiday season.
Santa’s little helpers then get to work by boxing up the different holiday moments—from the “smell of grandma’s cooking” to “auntie’s cheek squeezes.”
At first, Carrell isn’t too convinced, but he is reassured when he sees everything come together with the help of drones to deliver the festive packages to his sleigh.
“This year has been harder than ever,” he declares at the end of the ad. “And somehow, you all found a way to pull it off. You reminded us it’s not all about the toys, the ornaments, it’s about the little things.”
