As much as visual effects have evolved, there are certain aspects where nature still prevails. For one, the cyan you see on screens isn’t a “true cyan,” which doesn’t occur on many monitor or television displays. This means there’s a chance you haven’t even seen it before.
To replicate cyan, combinations of red, green, and blue light are mixed together—but it’s still not a perfect dupe. The RGB version is, in actual fact, more vibrant than cyan from the CMYK color system.
Thanks to an optical illusion that’s been making its rounds, you can now have a sneak peek of the elusive color. To view it, play the video below and fixate on the white dot in the red circle for about 30 seconds, then close your eyes tightly.
You’ll be shown a greenish-blue orb that isn’t quite the cyan you’re used to seeing, which is closer to aqua.
The visual illusion didn’t just become viral out of the blue, for lack of a better word. It was brought to the internet’s attention by TikTok user Kate Bacon, who demonstrated it in a video.
“I’m gonna show you a color that you’ve probably never seen before,” she told viewers. “It’s called true cyan, and most TVs and monitors aren’t capable of producing this pigment.”
