Ever wondered what the different colors of the plastic bread tags or twist ties that come with your weekly loaf mean? Well, they’re actually an indicator of how freshly baked your bread is.
Each color of the bread tag or twist tie lets you know which day of the week the bread was baked on.
Generally, the code is: Monday – blue, Tuesday – green, Thursday – red, Friday – white, and Saturday – yellow. Most bakeries stick to a five-day schedule, excluding Wednesday and Sunday.
According to Insider, the color codes are to help bakery employees remove stale loaves from shelves and replace them with fresh ones more easily.
For example, if they’re restocking the shelves on a Saturday, a blue or green tag could let them know the loaves should be replaced with freshly baked ones.
Another neat trick is that the colors flow in alphabetical order, which can help you remember the order of the days the next time you’re in a bakery.
However, not all bakeries follow this specific color code, while some might use a standard black or white bread tag or twist tie for all their loaves.
The best bet is always to check the manufacturing date or expiry date on each loaf for peak freshness!
