Following its debut on Android last month, WhatsApp is introducing self-erasing media and texts on iOS devices too. Users who sign up for the app’s beta version 2.21.140.9 on Testflight will be able to access the new feature now.
Those with access to the feature will be able to see a button, resembling a timer, in the caption field when they send photos or videos, as reported by WABetaInfo.
With this ‘View Once’ feature, images and videos will be erased immediately after the receiver has closed them. The sender will also receive a notification that the media has been viewed, as per Engadget.
However, like most “disappearing” messages, there’s nothing to disallow recipients from taking screenshots of what’s been sent. Recipients will also not be able to prevent senders from being notified that the media has been viewed, so there’s no way to sneak a second peek without the sender knowing.
Though the feature is still in beta testing, it’s likely to be rolled out to all Android and iOS devices in the near future.
