Switching its course, Formula 1 has unveiled what it deems to be the most futuristic racing car of all time. Its livery for 2022 seems to have a life of its own, with an iridescent finish that flashes wildly during races.
The car’s animated reaction to light showcases “the different intensities of racing” while reflecting “the elegance and speed of the sport,” advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy London told DesignTAXI.
Beneath the psychedelic sheen is a recreation of F1’s checkered flag, capturing “both the champagne-spraying elegance and the breakneck speed of the sport,” described Wieden+Kennedy London’s senior designer Jonny Isaacson and lead designer Alexandra Thursby-Pelham in the press release. While the color-changing livery portrays a high-speed race into the future, it also represents F1’s journey through the ages.
The car’s body itself takes on a new form, most notably with a reshaped, more “neutral” front wing that’s less aerodynamically sensitive when drivers get near one another. 2022’s car also sports 18-inch wheels, as opposed to 2021’s 13-inch ones, for a more aggressive and prominent feel.
The hype film, produced by Wieden+Kennedy London and Paris design agency Golgotha, takes audiences on a chaotic sensory trip in line with the visceral, revolutionary design system.
