Just like the mysterious Nickelodeon slime, if you licked the iconic lime-green code in The Matrix franchise, you’re bound to taste something. What’s that? You taste sushi?
That cryptic “rain” of text isn’t anything ominous, unless you’ve been using fish left out on the counter for a day. Back in 2017, production designer Simon Whiteley revealed to CNET that the combination of Japanese hiragana, katakana, and kanji characters that have prefaced every Matrix franchise are simply sushi recipes from his Japanese wife’s cookbooks.
“I like to tell everybody that The Matrix’s code is made out of Japanese sushi recipes,” Whiteley admitted. “Without that code, there is no Matrix.”
So, you’d be right to suspect The Matrix code of its fishy undertones—it’s been a sushi menu all along. Now, to tackle another glitch in the matrix: Did you just eat? Then why are you hungry again?
