Nope, that bag you see at the high street isn’t an imitation by a confused counterfeiter. It’s a very real byproduct of a sardonic ‘Hacking Project’ between Gucci and Balenciaga as a conversation piece about authenticity, counterfeiting, and appropriation.
The Gucci x Balenciaga collections, first previewed by the former at its Gucci Aria show, will officially debut on November 15. True to the theme, physical spaces for the launches will be rife with a cheeky mish-mash of elements like double-B curtains and graffiti-tagged windows, WWD reports.
On display at Balenciaga’s stores are cross-branded bags, puffy jacket, and caps that appear to be emblazoned with Gucci’s iconic monogrammed pattern, but are splashed in similar ‘BB’ initials instead. Balenciaga has also tagged classic-looking carryalls with the writing, “This is not a Gucci bag.”
Gucci is responding in kind by covering bags, jackets, and even Balenciaga’s chunky Triple S sneakers with both Gucci and Balenciaga branding.
Preview the double-drops, both debuting on the same day, below.
