Girard-Perregaux Revives 70s Luxury Watch That Displayed Time Only Momentarily
By Ell Ko, 23 Feb 2022
Luxury Swiss timepiece maker Girard-Perregaux was the producer of the Casquette watch between 1976 and 1978. Ever since then, it has remained a highly-coveted piece.
Now, the brand is resurrecting this iconic model 44 years after the original made its statement.
The accessory has been revived as Casquette 2.0 to tell the time in delightfully retro red digits with the press of a button, and these only make an appearance for a couple of seconds. Gizmodo reports that this will purportedly ensure the watch gets around two years of battery life with an average amount of daily use.
The watch itself is encased in a scratch-resistant ceramic case and bracelet. Grade Five titanium is used in its case back, buttons, and the vintage brand logo.
More functions are included, like the date display, the ability to keep track of a second timezone, as well as a “secret date” function that showcases a special date for just 20 seconds.
“Not all watches retain their looks and desirability with the passage of time,” Patrick Pruniaux, CEO of Girard-Perregaux, says in a statement.
“However, since production of the original Casquette ceased in 1978, the interest in this watch has never diminished… Quite simply, the original Casquette serves to further validate our reputation for designing watches with lasting appeal. We are delighted to welcome the Casquette back—a stylish watch that promises a lasting allure.”
While the original Casquette saw 8,200 pieces produced, the 2.0 is only going to get 820. Despite its hefty US$4,700 price tag, the revived version in all its glory has already been sold out online.
