The Tesla Powerwall has competition. Toyota is throwing its hat into the home battery pack ring, introducing one more backup for electricity in the event of an emergency.
Toyota’s version, called the O-Uchi Kyuden System, is supposedly meant to be installed on the ground, unlike Tesla’s, which is strapped to the wall. The automaker says the design draws from its expansive experience with developing electric vehicles and that it aims to give customers “peace of mind.”

When there’s no power outage, the unit can double as a battery pack for EVs.
Specs-wise, it has a capacity of 8.7 kWh ad a 5.5 kW output.
The O-Uchi Kyuden System is currently open for preorders in Japan, though Toyota plans to extend its rollout to other markets in time.
