A rival to the electric car giant that is Tesla, Polestar has announced its first electric performance SUV, the Polestar 3, in what the Swedish company said will mark its foray into one of the highest growth categories in the automotive industry.
The car is scheduled to premiere in October 2022 when pre-orders begin, with production expected to start in early 2023.
According to a press release, at launch, the Polestar 3 will come with a dual-motor drivetrain and battery that is targeted to last over 372 miles. Eventually, the car will offer autonomous highway piloting, using Luminar’s best-in-class LiDAR sensor and NVIDIA’s computing system.
“Polestar 3 is the SUV for the electric age. Our design identity evolves with this high-end large luxury EV, with a strong, individual brand character,” said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO at Polestar.
“With this car, we bring the ‘sport’ back to the SUV, staying true to our performance roots.”
Going forward, the automaker aims to launch a new car every year for the next three years, and is looking to tap into over 30 markets by the end of 2023 to increase its presence in the EV market.
