Adidas is taking a kick at animation in honor of the 120-year legacy of Spanish soccer club Real Madrid.
Dreamed up by Parisian creative agency MNSTR, the three-minute Odyssée Grandeza captures the enduring enthusiasm of fans through the style of Japanese anime, drawing parallels with the club’s own international resonance.
Barcelona-based BOL produced the film, while Argentina-based 2veinte directed and animated the short.
The story, featuring striker Karim Benzema, transports three teenagers to a mystical alternate-reality version of the historic Santiago Bernabéu stadium, where they have to battle it out with supernatural forces over a game of soccer. As their superpower, they’ve harnessed the communal spirit of Real Madrid fans.
References to the club’s legends, achievements, and jerseys can be seen throughout the animation.
“A journey of initiation, the film celebrates the mindset that drives the club that has led to so many victories,” says the press release.
