DIY ‘Hack’ To Assemble A Cat Scratching Post At Practically No Cost
By Mikelle Leow, 03 Jan 2023
You don’t need to let a cat out of the bag to know that caring for the most important member of your household doesn’t come cheap. And while felines are typically independent creatures who don’t have much trouble entertaining themselves, as their breadwinner, you’ll want to keep them engaged with little risk of getting your own furniture damaged.
One cat lover on TikTok has a trick to craft your own cat scratching post for a budget of close to nothing. The creator, known as @perpetuallyd1sappointed on the platform, calls it “the cheapest cat enrichment activity that [they] have.”
The TikToker went to the Home Depot and obtained the cheapest carpet on clearance. The user was lucky that day and got the scrap for free, but most people will be able to snag the fabric for about $2.
Some viewers have chimed in to say that home improvement store employees will give out carpet and flooring samples for free if you ask nicely, so there’s a chance you could make your scratching post for no cost too.
What the TikToker did was tack the carpet to their door frame using some flat-head nails, instantly creating a recreational item for their cat.
Though, if you’re using a rental, Apartment Therapy suggests using heavy-duty adhesive hooks instead of nails, and then cutting holes in the fabric to attach the hooks to.
