Casio is stepping into the future with a golden flourish, celebrating G-SHOCK’s 40th anniversary with the G-D001, a gem of a timepiece that fuses traditional human expertise and artificial intelligence.
The G-D001, emerging from Casio’s ambitious Dream Project #2, is a nod to the brand’s legacy of innovation, inspired by the visionary Kikuo Ibe, the “Father of G-SHOCK.” With the help of AI, this timepiece is crafted from a gee, shocking, 40 years’ worth of G-SHOCK data. It’s a glorious piece that tells a story of progression, creativity, and a commitment to an explorative future.

The AI model was tasked with creating a design that’s not just striking in appearance but also optimized for structural integrity and material efficiency. At the end of the day, it presented a watch with a robust, full-metal shock-resistant structure and a delightful organic form, finished in opulent gold.

Composed of 18-karat yellow gold, the watch’s case, bezel, and band have been hand-polished to perfection. The dial-less design is a striking feature, offering a peek into the watch’s internal mechanism. It’s a unique blend of a brushed metal main plate with silicon gears and ruby bearings, ensuring precision and elegance in every movement, while sporting a completely analog display.

Functionally, the G-D001 checks all the boxes for a high-end timepiece. It’s solar-powered, water-resistant up to 200 meters (656 feet), and equipped with Multiband 6 radio control for unparalleled accuracy. The watch also features a dual-time function, a stopwatch, and a special luminescence feature for better visibility in darker environments.
Complementing the luxurious wristwatch, the packaging bears an elegant, tower-like structure and sliding front cover, adorned with the model numbers of G-SHOCK’s past and present timepieces.

The case also doubles as a unique lighting feature, containing an LED light that can be used for indirect lighting. This effectively turns it into an interactive display, casting a captivating play of light and shadow that weaves through the history of G-SHOCK.
The G-D001 will be auctioned off through Phillips. The proceeds will go to The Nature Conservancy (TNC), supporting their global efforts in land and water conservation. The presented version, currently a prototype, will be tailor-made for the auction winner and is set to reach its new owner in early 2024.
