Netflix has rolled out the red carpet for its superstars of 2023, announcing The Night Agent as the reigning champion of the most-watched shows for the first half of 2023.
The streaming giant has published a What We Watched report, offering a peek into the varied tastes and preferences of its global audience of 240 million subscribers. Netflix plans to release these insights every six months, with the next 2023 findings arriving next year. This means the current lineup details programming data from January to June 2023.
The Night Agent, a thriller series that premiered on March 23, 2023, has topped the charts with a staggering 812.1 million hours viewed. This high-stakes drama has clearly resonated with audiences, holding them captive with its suspenseful storyline. Following closely is Ginny & Georgia, with its second season raking in 665.1 million hours viewed since its release on January 5, 2023. The mother-daughter duo continues to charm viewers with their tumultuous yet endearing relationship.
The Glory, a gripping tale of revenge and resilience, debuted on December 30, 2022, and has since accumulated 622.8 million hours viewed, marking its territory as the third most-watched show from January to June. Meanwhile, the quirky and darkly comic Wednesday has managed to enchant viewers since its premiere on November 23, 2022, amassing 507.7 million hours viewed and taking the fourth spot.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which continues the legacy of the Bridgerton universe with 503 million hours viewed since its release on May 4, 2023, securing its place as the fifth most popular show.
Viewing hours aren’t the only metric the company goes by to determine if a show is successful or not, however.
“Success on Netflix comes in all shapes and sizes, and is not determined by hours viewed alone,” the company disclaims. “We have enormously successful movies and TV shows with both lower and higher hours viewed. It’s all about whether a movie or TV show thrilled its audience—and the size of that audience relative to the economics of the title.”
