Studio Ghibli, the beloved Japanese animation house, is spiriting some magic into the hearts of fans worldwide with a special New Year’s greeting on its official website, adorned with an illustration by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki himself.
The artwork, celebrating the Year of the Dragon in 2024, features a vibrant green dragon—a symbol of strength and good luck in many Asian cultures—soaring amid fluffy clouds in Miyazaki’s distinctive hand-drawn style.
The mythical beast, a recurring motif in Asian folklore and a fitting emblem for the New Year’s celebrations, encapsulates the whimsical and mystical essence that permeates Miyazaki's filmography. Accompanied by bold red Japanese characters wishing “Happy New Year,” the illustration is a heartwarming nod to fans and their unwavering support.

The greeting also mentions The Boy and the Heron, Miyazaki’s highly anticipated film marking his return after a decade-long break. The movie will continue screening through the new year, Studio Ghibli adds.
“Production spanned seven years, and during that time, major events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and war permeated the world,” the stirring note reads. “But we are truly proud that the finished film has become a work that people all over the world can watch.”
The message further expresses gratitude to audiences and provides updates on the progress of Ghibli Park and ongoing projects within Studio Ghibli. Notably, it mentions that Miyazaki, who turned 83 on January 5, 2024, continues to be an active force at the studio, in spite of reports that The Boy and the Heron would be his last.
This New Year’s greeting is a cherished tradition for Studio Ghibli, whose films continue to enchant and inspire generations.
