An Energizer battery is juicing up the conversation about mobile design right now. However, with great power comes great bulk.
Does your phone often suffer the consequences of your doomscrolling? You’ll probably need something more heavy-duty. Unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, the Energizer Hard Case P28K boasts a hefty 28,000mAh battery. It’s a smartphone that doubles up as a power bank or, more specifically, vice versa.
This device comes from Energizer licensee Avenir Telecom, and it speaks to those who dread the daily tether to a charging cable. The P28K promises up to 94 days (about three months!) of standby time or about 122 hours (five days) of continuous talk time, appealing especially to users in areas where electricity isn’t as accessible. If you need to power it up, the model supports 33W charging.

Still pending approval from Energizer, it's set to launch in October. pic.twitter.com/3Q8oe2KeNe
Unsurprisingly, this monster has a weak spot. Since it weighs in at 570 grams and its built-in 28,000mAh battery brings its thickness up to 28mm, it’s a chunky boy. Ars Technica notes that it’s like having three iPhones stacked atop one another, and then some. Users will thus need to weigh the convenience of less frequent charging against the inconvenience of carrying around a heavier device.
All told, the gadget is battery-first, smartphone-second, but its features make it a decent backup phone (though, again, you’ll need to decide if the lack of portability is worth it). The P28K includes a Helio G99 4G processor, a 6.78-inch FHD+ display, and a camera setup that comprises a 64-megapixel and 20-megapixel rear duo and a 16-megapixel front shooter.

Despite its rugged appearance, it notably lacks a MIL-STD toughness rating but boasts an IP69 rating for water and dust resistance, making it a pretty solid choice for outdoor adventurers or those in demanding industries.
Slated for an October release with a price tag of around €299 (US$325), the P28K, unfortunately, won’t be hitting the US market. Its key audience includes those in regions plagued by power outages and outdoor enthusiasts who can benefit from its extended battery life.
But don’t batt on it becoming a reality
Whether or not this glorified smart battery will actually see the light of day is another story. Its predecessor, the Power Max P18K Pop with a smaller 18,000mAh battery, never did. Avenir Telecom, which has mentioned that the device is still “pending Energizer final approval,” has a history of announcing ambitious battery-centric phones that don’t always make it to market, throwing doubt on the future of the P28K.
