Distance makes the heart grow fonder, but in some cases, it emboldens one to commit rather strange acts. While art often bridges gaps and connects communities, a recent installation linking Dublin and New York hit a snag when human nature got in the way. The Dublin-New York portal, facilitating real-time visual communication between the two cities, has been temporarily closed due to incidents of “inappropriate behavior.”
The livestream portals, situated on North Earl Street in Dublin and the Flatiron South Public Plaza in New York, became controversial when several users engaged in indecent acts and displayed disturbing content, including images related to 9/11.

Initially celebrated for promoting unity and cultural exchange, the project quickly devolved into a platform for misconduct. The situation escalated when an OnlyFans model was recorded flashing the portal, prompting the temporary suspension of the live feed. Videos of these incidents circulated widely on social media, showcasing acts of public indecency, offensive gestures, and provocative historical references meant to distress viewers.

In one particularly upsetting incident, a participant displayed an image of the September 11 attacks to New York viewers, highlighting the potential for the misuse of this technological bridge.
In response, the Dublin City Council has announced plans to implement technical solutions to prevent further misuse and ensure the portal remains a positive and enriching experience for both cities. Despite these setbacks, the council remains hopeful about the portal’s future, aiming to continue fostering meaningful connections between distant communities—but not without first refining the experience.
