After the meatball found its pedestal, the humble hex wrench is also finally getting its moment in the spotlight. IKEA has immortalized its trusty Allen key as the ÖDLEBLAD lamp. This sphere of warm light is a playful wink at the unsung hero of every bookshelf and bed frame, with clever assembly in mind.
ÖDLEBLAD arrives as a birch-veneer sphere composed of 60 identical Allen-key–shaped pieces. Created by IKEA of Sweden designer David Wahl, it comes together without screws or extra fittings; each part clicks into place using precision geometry. The orb of form and function spans about 48 centimeters (18.9 inches) in diameter.
Wahl has described the lamp as a tribute meant to let the Allen key “step forward into the light as a sculptural centerpiece” rather than stay buried in a drawer.

The illumination effect leans soft and understated. Light filters through the veneer, diffusing warmth rather than casting harsh beams. Rather than dominating the room, the lamp’s presence whispers elegance through its material and patterning. Wahl’s approach aims to strike that balance: the design is visible as structure, but the lighting itself feels calm and ambient.
“The challenge was to design a flatpacked lamp that avoids unnecessary material and connects without any fittings. For me, that means the project is a lot about designing the production itself,” Wahl explains. “The Allen key shape is brilliant, because with its specific form, we get precision-cut parts with minimal waste. The entire sphere is held together by its own geometry. There’s no need for extra fittings, which is a smarter way to use materials and a really satisfying way to build something.”
IKEA has leaned into a flat-pack ethos without making the buyer sweat. ÖDLEBLAD, priced at US$87.99, ships in five modules—each a cluster of 12 parts—so that final construction feels more like connecting puzzle pieces than coming to grips with a bunch of tiny screws. The shade is compatible with IKEA’s SUNNEBY cord set and fits E27 LED bulbs.
