Starbucks customers can now bring a piece of their home to their coffee run, for meaningful reasons, by using personal, clean cups in place of the chain’s drinkware for all company-operated and participating licensed stores across the US and Canada.
This move, inclusive of drive-thru, mobile app, and in-café orders, rolled out nationwide on January 3 and is part of the coffee giant’s broader commitment to reduce waste and promote sustainable practices. This shift makes Starbucks the first national coffeehouse chain to extend personal cup usage to mobile orders, setting a new standard for the coffee industry.
“At Starbucks, we envision a future where every beverage can be served in a reusable cup,” says Michael Kobori, Starbucks chief sustainability officer. “Offering customers more options to use a personal cup when they visit Starbucks marks tangible progress towards the future. We know our customers are passionate about the planet, and now, they can join us in our efforts to give more than we take, no matter how they order.”

Despite the acceptance of drinkers’ own cups, Starbucks maintains a strict policy of not rinsing them in-store to maintain hygiene and equipment safety, with the process designed with convenience and cleanliness in mind.
Drive-thru customers simply need to inform their barista of the reusable cup, which will be handled using a contactless vessel. Baristas won’t take in dirty drinkware, as they won’t be washing it.
For those ordering via the Starbucks app, selecting the ‘Personal Cup’ option under ‘Customization’ will signal the barista to prepare for a reusable cup handoff.

Patrons participating in this green initiative will enjoy a 10-cent discount on their beverage and, for Starbucks Rewards members in the US, an additional perk of 25 Bonus Stars. The incentive aims to not only acknowledge the small efforts of individuals but also reinforce the collective impact of choosing reusable options.
Kate Daly, managing director and head of the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners, champions the initiative, highlighting that the most eco-friendly option is often the cup already in our hands.
“As we know, the most sustainable cup is likely the one you already own. Bringing your own cup to stores is a critical step toward reducing single-use packaging waste,” says Daly.

By encouraging the use of personal cups, Starbucks is taking a concrete step towards its goal of reducing waste by 50% come 2030, actively decreasing the number of disposable cups contributing to landfill waste.
