Asics’ New Shoes Double Up As Mosquito Nets For Your Ankles
By Nicole Rodrigues, 23 Jul 2022
Asics’ new shoes almost guarantee you’ll never have another itchy bite on your ankle ever again.
The ‘Bespoke Gel Kayano 14 Gore-Tex’ is Asics’ and Japanese clothing brand BEAMS’ newest creation. The name derives from the Japanese word for mosquito—kaya—and the possessive particle—no.
If it wasn’t obvious already, the sneaker was made for avid hikers and wilderness lovers to safely trek through mountains and jungles without insects, particularly mosquitoes, biting their ankles.
The net is fastened to the shoe via zips and buckles and a pull-tab at the top to fasten it around the wearer’s shin, which means that it can also be detached.
Without the unique and oddly specific netting, the Gel Kayano looks like a pretty cool shoe, with an interesting red fastener across the middle of the shoe. It is encased in Gore-Tex, which keeps the shoes not only waterproof but breathable as well.
BEAMS is on quite a collaborative stride lately, with projects launched with Birkenstock and New Balance, to name a few.
